A swan who was found covered in petrol is on the road to recovery at an RSPCA wildlife centre.

The swan was rescued by a team of RSPCA officers using a boat on a lake in Gerards Lane, St Helens, on Wednesday, 9 August, after a member of the public spotted the oil-covered bird on a bank. An empty petrol can was also recovered from the lake.

A swan is recovering at an RSPCA wildlife centre after he was found covered in petrol in a lake at St Helens.

Two RSPCA officers rescued the swan from a lake in Gerards Lane on Wednesday (9 August) after a member of the public reported the incident to the charity.

The swan was taken to the RSPCA’s Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich, Cheshire, where he will be cleaned by staff and monitored.

A cygnet had a lucky escape after getting fishing line tangled around his beak on a lake in St Helens.

The RSPCA was called after the young swan was seen with the fishing litter dangling from his mouth in Grosvener Road, on 22 June.

Fortunately the cygnet was untangled by a team of two RSPCA officers – Steve Wickham and Nick Green. Happily, he was released back to his family after being found to be uninjured.

The RSPCA is appealing for people to come forward with information after a poorly puppy was dumped in St Helen’s.

The pomeranian puppy was handed in to the RSPCA after being found out in a car park on Monday, 12 September. He was immediately taken to a vets where he was being treated for symptoms of parvo – a virus which can be fatal to dogs.

Sadly, he died overnight after his condition deteriorated.

The RSPCA is reminding people to dispose of angling litter carefully after a heron died from injuries sustained after he got his feet tangled in fishing line.

The heron was rescued by Animal Collection Officer Derek Hampson on Monday, 8 August, from a lake in Burtonhead Road, St Helen’s, after a concerned passer-by contacted the RSPCA.
