A member of the public in Denbigh had a fright – when her dog found a scorpion running across the living room floor.

RSPCA Cymru was alerted after the tiny scorpion was found by six-year-old Hungarian Vizsla dog Otis at a property on The Hay Barn in the North Wales town on Saturday 5 September.

Fortunately, the scorpion is uninjured and has been transferred to appropriate accommodation with a keeper who lives in the region.

An RSPCA inspector dealt with a job with a sting in its tail – after a stowaway scorpion hid in a suitcase and travelled 5,400 miles from Mexico to Buckinghamshire.

The animal welfare charity was contacted by a holidaymaker who discovered the tiny critter – just 2cm long – while unpacking her suitcase after a break to the country.

An unusual resident has been found at Swansea University – a European yellow-tailed scorpion; rescued by RSPCA Cymru after being spotted by a passer-by.

Found on a wall at the University’s Singleton Campus on 16 November, the non-native species is not routinely found in Swansea – though settled populations do exist in Sheerness in Kent, and elsewhere on the Isle of Sheppey, with the scorpions believed to have been accidentally brought to the UK in the 1860s.
