Two London-based schools have won a prestigious RSPCA-backed debating competition, as the top primary and secondary school competitors are announced after hundreds took part.

Elmhurst Primary School and Sydenham School have won the Debate Mate Cup x RSPCA Grand Finals, beating off competition from 24 other schools in the two grand finales – with separate RSPCA-supported events for primary school pupils, and for secondary school pupils, for the very first time.

The RSPCA has called on the UK and Welsh Governments to follow suit as the European Commission makes the “incredible” pledge to propose phasing out cage systems for a variety of farmed animals.

The Commission has today (30 June) announced their response to the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) ‘End the Cage Age’ which saw backing from more than 1.4m citizens, including over 54,000 from the UK.

The RSPCA has welcomed new guidance from the UK Government which will make it easier for people in England to walk and exercise their dogs amid ongoing lockdown restrictions.

Advice for pet owners in England was updated yesterday (13 January), and now outlines that people with dogs can go out more often than once a day to exercise their canine companion if necessary. However, people are still advised by the UK Government to “limit this where possible”.
