Fifty five dogs – including breeding bitches and puppies – have been seized by Durham Constabulary and placed in RSPCA care after warrants were executed at six addresses this morning (Thursday 6 February).

 

Six people – five men and one woman – were arrested at the addresses in Shotton Colliery and Haswell and taken to a police station to be interviewed. Arrangements have been made for a seventh person, a woman, to attend voluntarily later today.

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences surrounding the sale of animals following a multi-agency investigation in Prestwich, Greater Manchester.

Uniformed RSPCA inspectors and officers from our special operations unit, along with Trading Standards officers from Salford City Council and Bury Council, as well as officers from Project Gulf at Greater Manchester Police, attended the property in Greenhill yesterday  (Monday 18 November).

We have welcomed the launch of a new study into the puppy trade across Europe, amid concerns of poor welfare standards and breeding practices.

We have concerns that dogs and cats within some EU member states are being bred irresponsibly and with welfare standards that fall well below even the minimum standards in the UK.
