Huge demand for lockdown dogs sees RSPCA rehome 4,877 canines in 2020

Dog rehoming soared during lockdown as families spending more time at home due to the pandemic and home-working sought the companionship of a four-legged friend.

New figures, released today (11 October) by the RSPCA, reveal that 4,877 dogs were rehomed in 2020, despite the Coronavirus pandemic and lockdown. In Herefordshire & Worcestershire, the RSPCA rehomed 50 dogs in 2020.

Rainbow chameleon mistaken for toy winks at Rhyl finder

A Rhyl resident had a surprise in their garden, when a rainbow-coloured chameleon they mistook for a toy winked at them!

The stray panther chameleon had – remarkably – settled on a camellia plant in the garden of a Weaver Avenue property in the North Wales town.

A shocked local resident mistakenly thought someone had left a toy on the plant – before the multi-coloured chameleon – found on 19 August – closed one eye!

Injured goose ‘sold down the river’ saved by RSPCA and men in a canoe

A domestic white goose who was literally ‘sold down the river’ by her previous owner has been rescued by the RSPCA with the help of a group of men in canoes after being left with nasty injuries caused by fishing litter left on the River Wye.

The goose, believed to have been callously dumped some weeks ago, was reported to the RSPCA after it was seen struggling with an injured leg.

‘The current Hunting Act works’ says RSPCA after three hunters prosecuted for illegal activity

In the midst of the looming Statutory Instrument debate on Wednesday, the Hunting Act is still doing the important job of bringing those to justice those who have committed crimes against Britain’s wildlife.  

Last Friday saw the successful prosecution of three men who were found to be illegally hunting in Herefordshire. Relief at U-turn on badger cull

We are relieved DEFRA has decided against rolling out the badger cull to further counties after they backed down on plans to licence more culls in other parts of the British countryside.

Following pilot culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire we feared large areas of land in Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, East Sussex, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Cheshire, Wiltshire and Herefordshire would be included in future culling operations.
