A gannet who was spotted trapped 150ft down Bempton Cliffs, in Bridlington, when the rest of the seabirds left the breeding ground at the weekend has been rescued by the RSPCA.

 

Specialist officers from the charity’s rope rescue team travelled from across the country to help the juvenile bird who was ‘flapping around and clearly distressed’ on the 300ft cliffs at the reserve, run by the RSPB.

RSPCA Cymru answered almost 300 calls in 2017 about animals harmed by rubbish, according to shocking new figures.

In total, the charity recieved 278 calls from Wales over the year about animals impacted by litter and discarded objects – incidences the RSPCA say are “entirely avoidable”.

Litter-related incidents across 2017 included three gulls who had to be put to sleep after being found trapped in fishing litter, at Hendre Lake in Cardiff.

A gannet has been rescued by RSPCA Cymru after becoming caught in fishing litter on Towyn Beach in Rhyl.

The charity says the incident highlights the “massive dangers” which fishing litter poses to the nation’s wildlife.

RSPCA Cymru attended on 9 July to find the gannet sat in the middle of a pebble beach, making no obvious attempt to move away from members of the public.
