Avoiding unnecessary single-use plastics this festive season could help ensure a kinder Christmas for animals, says RSPCA Cymru.

The call comes after new statistics show the RSPCA has received 26 calls from Wales about plastic-related incidents, up to 26 November this year. It follows 27 calls coming to RSPCA Cymru during 2017.

Call figures, however, are likely to be higher – as these only denote those calls where plastic was specifically referenced.

A swan is recovering at an RSPCA wildlife centre after he was found covered in petrol in a lake at St Helens.

Two RSPCA officers rescued the swan from a lake in Gerards Lane on Wednesday (9 August) after a member of the public reported the incident to the charity.

The swan was taken to the RSPCA’s Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich, Cheshire, where he will be cleaned by staff and monitored.

RSPCA Cymru has been meeting with thousands of show-goers, as the annual Royal Welsh Show continues.

The charity will be at the Royal Welsh Show throughout the week, with the annual agricultural show concluding at close of play on Thursday 27 July.

Show goers are being urged to back a petition supporting the establishment of an Animal Offender Register for Wales, with the charity receiving a “hugely positive reception” to the idea.
