The RSPCA has welcomed new guidance from the UK Government which will make it easier for people in England to walk and exercise their dogs amid ongoing lockdown restrictions.

Advice for pet owners in England was updated yesterday (13 January), and now outlines that people with dogs can go out more often than once a day to exercise their canine companion if necessary. However, people are still advised by the UK Government to “limit this where possible”.

The RSPCA has urged local authorities to explore relaxing locally-imposed restrictions on where dogs can be walked to help curb the possible spread of coronavirus and protect canine welfare.

Many Councils have previously introduced Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) to stop dogs being walked in certain areas – including on local sports pitches. Concerns have been raised that these PSPOs can limit suitable dog walking spots within some communities.

Approximately 400 humans and hundreds of dogs took over Bute Park on Saturday (May 18) as the hotly-anticipated Big Walkies Live returned to Cardiff.

The event marked a “celebration of dogs of all shapes and sizes” – as canines and their owners enjoyed two scenic walk routes through the beautiful surroundings of the central Cardiff-based park.

Dog owners across North Wales have been invited to a free dog-walking event to raise awareness for the sad plight many animals face over the festive period.

The Christmas ‘Big Walkies’ event  - organised by the RSPCA’s Wrexham District & Deeside Branch – takes place at Wepre Park in Connah’s Quay on Sunday (17 December), with free registration from 10.30am, and the walk getting underway half-an-hour later.

Dogs and their owners took a six-mile sponsored ‘Mutt Strutt’ in Llandudno on Sunday (1 October), raising vital funds for North Wales’ RSPCA Bryn-Y-Maen Animal Centre.

In total, 18 people registered for the event, and took their dogs on a stunning walk around the Great Orme, savouring the scenery while raising vital funds for the Animal Centre.
