RSPCA Cymru is celebrating news that the Wild Animals and Circuses (Wales) Bill has been given Royal Assent.

A Royal Assent ceremony took place today (7 September), with the Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs Lesley Griffiths and First Minister Mark Drakeford present. The law is set to come into force on 1 December.

Members of the Senedd have unanimously backed the general principles of a law which will ban the use of wild animals in travelling circuses in Wales.

Assembly Members have been urged to use a plenary debate on the use of wild animals in circuses to show their support for anticipated Welsh Government legislation on the key animal welfare issue.

RSPCA has led the campaign to see the “outdated, cruel” practice brought to an end in Wales – and last month (14 February) welcomed news that the Welsh Government confirmed its plan to bring forward legislation to ban the use of wild animals in circuses.
