A man and woman have been sentenced after three dogs, a pony and two wild birds were found alone, and two of the dogs straying amongst traffic on a 50mph road, in the run up to Appleby Horse Fair.
Michael Price (D.O.B 07.05.91) of Lime Tree Avenue, Malton, North Yorkshire and Shannon Hanrahan (D.O.B 07.05.91) of Kidacre Street, Kidacre Park, Leeds, West Yorkshire appeared before Carlisle Magistrates’ Court last week (Tuesday 25 February) for sentencing.

Officers from the RSPCA will be pulling on their drysuits to make a final sweep of the River Eden today, ahead of Appleby Horse Fair*.
The annual Gypsy and traveller event starts tomorrow (Thursday 2-Monday 6 June) in the Cumbrian town.

The death of two horses in a crash on the ‘flashing lane’ at Appleby Horse Fair* on Friday (5 June) has ‘overshadowed’ what was otherwise a good event for animal welfare.
The RSPCA appealed for information after the incident which happened on Long Marton Road, traditionally used for driving and riding horses at high speed to be shown off to potential buyers.

The RSPCA says the main issues at this year’s Appleby Horse Fair* were dogs being left in hot cars and the over-working of horses, despite warnings ahead of the annual gypsy and traveller event.

We’re urging people not to bring dogs to Appleby Horse Fair, Cumbria during the annual Gypsy and Traveller event, which starts today (Thursday, 5 June).
Despite repeatedly advising people of the dangers, we rescued a German Shepherd dog from a hot car last year. The owner was convicted of two offences, banned from keeping dogs and ordered to pay £10,000 in costs. The previous year two dogs were removed from hot cars. Their owners received cautions.
