RSPCA rescue operations come in all shapes and sizes and one of our officers in north Wales recently helped a hedgehog to freedom.
The juvenile hedgehog was found in the drain of a garden in Townsend Avenue, Wrexham on 10 August. Despite the best efforts of the householder the prickly creature wouldn’t budge but RSPCA inspector Kia Thomas came to the rescue. The lucky hedgehog was unharmed by his ordeal and returned to the wild.

The RSPCA is appealing for information after five rabbits were found under a car in St Albans on Tuesday (6 August).
The mother rabbit and her four babies (known as kittens or kits) were found in a parking area near to Verulamium Park on Prae Close.
A passer by noticed the tan and black rabbits and managed to ask other people to help catch the rabbits before confining them in a dog crate and calling the RSPCA.

As temperatures soar we are stepping up our drive to get inspectors into Dover Port to check the welfare of animals being exported.
Since the live export trade moved from Ramsgate to Dover in May our inspectors have been stopped from checking the welfare of animals being shipped abroad and despite writing to the Harbour Board, have been refused entry.

We’re bracing ourselves for ‘Black Saturday’ – the busiest day of the year for our emergency helpline.
On Saturday 20 July, we expect to receive a call for help for an animal at least every eight seconds. We’re already receiving a record number of calls (a 65 per cent increase since January 2012), and hundreds more animals being abandoned over the summer period.
