Today we launch our annual competition for budding young snappers to showcase their best images of animals.

The Young Photographer Awards 2013 (YPA13) welcomes all kinds of pictures. From cheeky portraits of family pets to imaginative photos of wildlife and even close-ups of insects in a mix of categories open to young people under 19.

We have vowed to continue our fight to stop the Westminster Government’s planned cull of badgers in England.

Yesterday (Wednesday, 5 June) MPs voted narrowly against an opposition motion to reverse the government’s misguided strategy aimed at combating bovine TB.

We are urging people not to bring dogs to Appleby Horse Fair, Cumbria for the annual Gypsy and Traveller event, which starts on Thursday (6-12 June).

Despite advising people of the dangers, our officers pulled two dogs out of hot cars again during the 2012 event. Their owners were given cautions.

Four newborn kittens have had a lucky escape after falling down the gap in a cavity wall in a bungalow in Frinton-on-Sea, Essex.

The owners of the bungalow, Sue and Brian Davie, alerted us after hearing the cries of the kittens. Their mother, a ginger cat later found to be almost blind, was located in the loft and it was clear that she had given birth but her offspring were nowhere to be seen.
