Commenting on the announcement of the launch of a Welsh Government consultation on draft Regulations – ‘The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Animal Exhibits) (Wales) Regulations 2020’ – RSPCA Cymru assistant director for external relations Claire Lawson said:
“We warmly welcome the launch of this consultation – and look forward to closely scrutinising these important proposals.
“The welfare of animals based in both static and traveling exhibits is of paramount importance to the RSPCA, and this consultation comes at a time when Wales is also set to legislate on the use of wild animals in travelling circuses.
“We will now closely engage with this consultative process, in the hope we can best ensure high welfare standards for any animal based in an exhibit-type environment.
“As we head towards the autumn and winter months, the welfare of animals like reindeer based in festive displays will again come under the spotlight. Those discussions highlight the importance of this consultation, and the need to ensure Wales prioritises animal welfare for animals living in exhibits.”
