The RSPCA is appealing for information after a number of dead swans have been found at the Aldenham Reservoir, run by Aldenham Angling Club in Elstree, Borehamwood.
Inspector Callum Isitt is appealing for information after a number of swans have been found dead at the location over a six-week period.
Some of the dead swans have been found decapitated, and others without any obvious signs of injuries.
While in many instances decapitated birds can be a result of predation by other wildlife, the officer is concerned that so many birds have been found dead in a short space of time.
Inspector Isitt said: “The RSPCA was contacted by a concerned caller regarding a number of swans found dead at the location over recent weeks.
“Given that around seven swans have been found dead, I am looking into this and would appeal to anyone who may have any information.
“We do find that in some instances when an animal has no head this could be a result of predation by other wild animals, however we do not know why there has been a spate of dead birds being found in the area. One swan found also had part of its chest removed and two have been found without their heads. A further four swans have been found dead around the reservoir with no apparent injuries.
“Swans are beautiful animals and I would like to get to the bottom of why there has been dead birds found at this reservoir, which is in quite a secluded location.”
Swans are protected and it’s illegal to kill one of these birds. Anyone caught deliberately trying to injure a wild bird, or kill or take it without a licence, can face up to six months in prison and/or an unlimited fine if found guilty under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Inspector Isitt is keen to establish what has happened to these birds so is asking anyone with any information about what happened to them to contact the RSPCA appeal line on 0300 123 8018 and leave a message for him.
