Dr Sam Gaines with Flo the dogDog owners have only days remaining to snap up their spot at the waggiest, woofiest mass dog walk of the year.

RSPCA Cymru is hosting BIG Walkies LIVE at Sophia Gardens, Bute Park this Sunday (June 10) – with the event getting underway at 10am.

Pet experts at the animal charity have flagged the importance to dogs of “at least daily exercise, and appropriate opportunities to explore, investigate and sniff”, with BIG Walkies LIVE “an amazing event for dogs and their families alike”.

Owners and their canine companions can choose from a scenic 2.5-mile (4km) or 1.25mile (2km) walk, with hundreds of poochy pals already booked into the special event.

An event village will be open to attendees before and after their walk – including food and drink stands, children’s games, and a host of other stalls. Radio Cardiff 98.7FM DJs Wayne & Wyburn will be playing music, and compèring the festivities.

Entry to the event is only £5 – and free for under-16s, with a host of goodies on offer for all the family – including t-shirts, a dog bandana, children’s toy and more for ticket-holders. Tickets can be purchased online up until the event, while sign-up is also available on the day.

Dr Sam Gaines, head of the RSPCA’s companion animals department, said: “We’re so excited that BIG Walkies LIVE is nearly here. Tickets have been really popular, with hundreds of poochy pals set to descend on Bute Park this Sunday (June 10).

“RSPCA Cymru is so proud to add this exciting mass dog walk to Cardiff’s calendar of events, and we cannot wait to meet dog owners from across Wales’ capital city and beyond.

“Put simply, walking dogs can be so important to their general health and welfare. Ensuring dogs have at least daily exercise, and appropriate opportunities to explore, investigate and sniff, is one of the most important considerations to ensure our canine friends are properly cared for.

“Many dogs enjoy interacting and playing with other people and animals. It can be so important for their development – encouraging natural behaviours which they enjoy and value.

“That’s why RSPCA Cymru’s BIG Walkies LIVE is such an amazing event for dogs and their families alike – promoting canines of all shapes and sizes, and offering the chance to do something bigger than the everyday walkies!”

RSPCA Cymru will also be raising awareness, at the event, of their campaign against breed-specific legislation – a law which currently restricts the ownership of certain types of dogs deemed to be dangerous. Representatives from the charity are giving evidence on the issue of breed-specific legislation to a UK parliamentary enquiry a few days after BIG Walkies LIVE.
