RSPCA inspector Kia Thomas with Cabinet Secretary Lesley GriffithsThe Welsh Government cabinet secretary responsible for animal welfare swapped her spot at the cabinet table for the passenger seat of an RSPCA inspectorate van yesterday (Thursday February 8).

Lesley Griffiths AM, the Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs, joined RSPCA inspector Kia Thomas on calls across North East Wales.

A number of calls were dealt with across the region – including giving advice to a horse owner about the environment their animal was being kept in, an alleged abandonment of a dog, and complaints related to the treatment of wildlife.

RSPCA officers play a pivotal role in the protection of animal welfare on the frontline – and inspector Thomas said it was a “great privilege” to be able to demonstrate to the Cabinet Secretary the nature of work undertaken by the charity, each and every day.

Inspector Thomas said: “RSPCA Cymru was absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to demonstrate to the Cabinet Secretary the unique work we undertake on the frontline each and every day.

“We investigate thousands of complaints of animal cruelty in Wales each year – and the RSPCA remains fully committed to working closely with the Welsh Government to find solutions to enhance animal welfare all across the country.

“To this end, it was a great privilege to have the Cabinet Secretary with me, and to talk her through how we operate on the frontline, and how we help all animals – including pets, farm animals and wildlife.

“It was a typically varied day in this part of North Wales, which saw us deal with calls about a whole variety of animals, which is typical of the diverse workload the RSPCA deals with on a day-to-day basis.”

Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs Lesley Griffiths said: “Animal welfare is a priority for us and I strongly believe animals should be protected from pain, injury, fear and distress. It was a privilege to spend the afternoon with the inspector to get a real insight into the important work the RSPCA does to uphold and improve the standards of animal welfare.”
