An RSPCA rescue dog who urgently needed heart surgery has had the life-saving operation – thanks to generous donations from the public.
Five-year-old terrier Molly had a heart block, which meant that her heart could not beat properly. Without a pacemaker, her lifespan would have been reduced.
A fundraising appeal was launched by the RSPCA’s Coventry branch earlier this month to pay for the surgery – with the £2,500 target being met within three hours. Her heart operation was booked in for, aptly, Valentine’s Day.
Happily, the operation was a success, and today (Wednesday 15 February) Molly is recovering well.
Danni Holder, kennel supervisor at the Coventry branch, said: “We have spoken to the vet this morning for an update and they said she is doing really well, bright and her tail is wagging – they are really pleased with her progress, and so are we.
“We are extremely thankful to everyone who donated towards Molly’s operation. Once she is fully recovered, she will have a new lease of life. When she is well enough we will look to rehome her, which will be the icing on the cake. She is such a lovely dog and we are so pleased that everything is looking up for her.”
Chris Linney, head of cardiology at Willows Veterinary Centre in Solihull and who operated on Molly, said: “Molly needed pacemaker surgery due to a dangerously slow heart rhythm – without it the outlook for her was uncertain. Pacemaker surgery was challenging due to her small size but it went well and she is making a speedy recovery under the care of our veterinary team at Willows.
“In a few days she will be ready to continue her recovery with the RSPCA and her journey to hopefully find her forever home. The whole team has fallen in love with Molly, she is a fantastic dog and has been an absolute star with us here.”
Molly arrived in the RSPCA’s care in May last year, after her previous owner did not care for her properly. She had a severe skin condition which made her very sore and uncomfortable, and it took many months for her to recover.
Her story will feature on Channel 5’s The Dog Rescuers, later this year.
