A cygnet who had got in a bit of a flap on top of a cinema in Tamworth had to be rescued by the RSPCA.

Staff at Odeon cinema, in Bolebridge Street, called the RSPCA after spotting the swan on top of the 50ft-high roof.

Animal Collection Officer Cara Gibbon, who attended the incident last Wednesday (30 November), said: “The young swan had managed to get himself up there but he didn’t seem to want to move – he was obviously a bit perplexed about how to get down and he didn’t have enough room to fly off.

“It was a very high roof and was a little scary up there but we safely managed to catch him. The safest way to get him back to the ground was by lowering him in a swan bag down a shaft – he was very calm on the ride down. I think he must have been keen to get back to his family, who were nearby to the cinema.

“We’re not sure why he decided to land up there – perhaps he could smell popcorn rising up from downstairs. It just goes to show that you never know what sort of jobs you will get called to on a daily basis when you work for the RSPCA!”
