The RSPCA is appealing for people to come forward and offer a home to a dog found tethered in a Birmingham garden with a climbing hook through his neck.
Rex, a one-year-old Presa Canaria, came into the RSPCA’s care after he was rescued in Stechford on 15 October last year.
He was suffering from an infection after a Caribiner, a large hook with a spring-loaded clasp used in climbing, which was being used to tether him had gone through the skin of his neck. It is thought to have been like that for at least three days and had caused the skin to grow around the hook.
Kelly Legg, kennel supervisor at the RSPCA’s Newbrook Animal Centre, in Frankley Green, said: “Rex is our super hero. He suffered the most horrific injury but he has been so brave since day one and he has made a fabulous recovery.
“Rex is a very tall dog and weighs 37kg – he is a young puppy trapped inside a giant body. He gets very excited when he is in familiar surroundings and is very unsure when faced with something new. We are working hard to expose him to as many new things as possible, such as going out for rides in a car, meeting new people and having baths. He does get used to things quite quickly.”
Kelly said that Rex is “in his element” when he is off his lead. “Rex has met so many different dogs during his stay with us and he has been playful and super friendly with them all,” she said.
“He is so much fun
to watch when he is off running with his friends. We think he would be a great companion for an existing dog if an introduction at our centre is successful.
“Rex has suffered at the hands of people, but he has shown that he has such a huge heart and wants to be friends with everyone.”
Rex’s previous owner was disqualified from keeping animals for ten years by magistrates earlier this year after pleading guilty to failing to meet the dog’s needs.
