The RSPCA is appealing for information after the body of a dog with a plastic bag over her head and her legs tied together was found in a canal near Stockport.

A member of the public found the body of the Perro de Presa Canario breed yesterday (Monday 18 January) in Romiley Canal, by Romiley Board Mill, in Oakwood Road.

As the dog was microchipped, the owner of the dog has been identified. The dog was reported stolen from them last month.

The RSPCA is now urging anyone with any information to contact the charity.

Animal welfare officer Steve Wickham said: “This is a very sad case and it is likely that the dog suffered before she died.

“She was found floating in the river with a plastic bag over her head, string around her neck and with her legs tied together.

“She was not an old dog, no more than two years old. We cannot say for certain how long she had been there for, and until a post-mortem examination has been carried out, we cannot say for certain how she died.

“We ask that anyone who knows anything about the dog and how she died to contact us in complete confidence on 0300 123 8018.”
