The RSPCA is appealing for information after a pregnant dog was dumped in Stoke-on-Trent.

The five year-old German Shepherd was found by a member of the public tied up outside Hanchurch Woods in Stoke at 5.30am on Sunday (September 20).

The dog – who has been named Fern due to being found near woods – was in a poor condition, very thin and unable to eat. The member of the public took her to a vet, who contacted the RSPCA. While at the vets, it was discovered she was pregnant with three pups.

RSPCA inspector Laura Bryant said: “It is absolutely appalling that someone has let her get into this state and then just dumped her. She was understandably terrified.

“The reason for Fern being so ill is due to calcium deficiency caused by pregnancy and so she is now being treated and is improving slowly. It is hoped that she will start producing milk soon as she is so thin and only a few weeks away from whelping.”

Fern is still being treated at a vets. The RSPCA is working with German Shepherd Rescue to help find her a foster home.

Anyone with information on Fern should call the RSPCA on 0300 123 8018.
