NEWPORT Adoption Centre is doing all it can to promote responsible rabbit ownership as part of Rabbit Awareness Week.

This year the awareness week – which kicked off on Saturday and runs until Sunday 17 May – is all about providing the correct environment for your pet rabbit.

Rehoming coordinator at the in-store RSPCA adoption centre based at Newport Pets At Home, Becca Vincent, said: “This year we are getting stuck in to Rabbit Awareness Week with lots of activities going on throughout the week.

“We have got a display showing the correct rabbit environment and there is also information available on rabbit food and accommodation, as well as the five welfare needs for rabbits which is the need for a suitable environment, the need for a suitable diet, the need to be able to exhibit normal behaviour patterns, the need to be housed with, or apart, from other animals and need to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.

“Our centre will also be displaying information about RSPCA rabbits that are looking for homes.”

Then on Saturday [16 May] Newport Adoption Centre will be holding a rabbit microchipping event between 11am and 2pm.

“Everyone is welcome, we ask for a donation of £4 per rabbit and there is no appointment needed,” added Becca.
