A 19 year old woman from Staffordshire has had her hair shaved off in aid of the RSPCA, raising much-needed funds.

#AnimalHero Nikki Kelly, who lives on Linden Grove, Newcastle Under Lyme, did the sponsored event on Friday (20 December) at her local Toni & Guy salon, who took the opportunity to become #AnimalHeroes themselves by doing it for free and offering discounted follow up appointments.Nikki Kelly after the head shave

Nikki said: “They were the first place I rang and they said sure, come in, we’ll do it for free. It was great.

“It is a big thing for a woman to have her hair shaved off, and they really looked after me.”

Nikki decided she wanted to do some fundraising after seeing an RSPCA advert on TV. She said: “I wanted to do something to help the animals who are badly treated and suffer terribly.

“I’ve got two dogs, a Staffordshire bull terrier and a Chihuahua, and love them to bits.

“I was thinking of making a donation of a couple of pounds a week but thought it would have more impact if I could raise a lump sum instead. I had a few ideas and when I asked around, most people said they’d sponsor me to shave my head.

Steven Daniels, Managing Director of Toni & Guy, said: “We do have a charitable trust ourselves but are always happy to help others who are fundraising for good causes.

“I’ve got a cat and a dog myself and think it’s great what she is doing.”

Nikki set herself a target of £100 and has raised just over £120 so far. The money will go towards the work of the RSPCA in preventing cruelty and promoting kindness to animals.

The RSPCA launched its ‘Everyday Hero’ campaign last month, which urges every one of us to be an #AnimalHero by doing what we can to improve animal welfare, whether it is reporting a case of cruelty, donating unwanted clothes to an RSPCA charity shop, putting food out for the birds in our garden or making a donation.
